This beautiful second (corrected) edition of A Commonplace Book of Thoughts, Memories and Fancies by Mrs Jameson was published by Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans in 1855. It's bound in full polished calf with blind stamped gilt to the boards. The spine features gilt decorated compartments within raised bands and a red leather title label. All edges gilt. Ink stamp of the binder G F Holroyd in top corner of one of the preliminary blank pages.
This second edition (the first edition was published the previous year) of A Commonplaces Book of Thoughts, Memories and Fancies was written by Mrs Jameson, a prominent Anglo-Irish art historian, author, and feminist. Part 1 of the book covers Ethics and Character whilst Part 2 covers Literature and the Arts.
The book is in very good condition with just light marking and scuffing to the leather; there are also some small bumps and chips to the surface of the leather. There is a slight split to the top of the front joint but the board is very securely attached.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled and as mentioned above there is a binder's stamp to the top corner of one of the preliminary blank pages. The pages show light age toning and scattered foxing but are in very good, antique condition. There is a small stain to the top edge of the final page.
Dimensions of the book are approximately 20.7cm x 13.8cm x 3.5cm.
Every book purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
