This stunning antique edition of Sandford and Merton A Book for the Young by Thomas Day was published by T Nelson and Sons in 1873. So the book is from the mid Victorian era.
The book is bound in brown cloth over bevelled boards, with a pasted on illustration to the front board. There is blind stamped decoration in gilt and black to the front board and spine. It's in good condition but there is wear and bumping to the corners, with some slight fraying to the cloth. The board edges are also bumped, and there is soiling and dulling to the gilt text block edges. The boards show light soiling and there is minor marking to the back board. The spine is sunned and darkened, with rubbing to the spine edges; crushing to the spine ends has caused some splitting to the cloth.
Inside, the front free endpaper has been removed, meaning the book opens onto the half title page. This has caused some surface damage to the front pastedown. The pages are clean and bright, with only light age toning and sporadic foxing. There are superficial cracks to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound.
Dimensions approximately 17.3cm x 12cm x 3.8cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
