This striking French book of Un Mariage D'Amour by Ludovic Halevy was published in Paris by Calmann Levy in 1898. In English, it is A Marriage of Love and is a novella by the famous author and playwright Halevy. It was first published in the 1880s, and the story is a charming, witty romance that contrasts genuine passion with the rigid social and class expectations of late 19th-century French society.
It features a contemporary half calf binding with marbled boards. There is gilt tooling and five raised bands to the spine. Top edge gilt.
It's in very good condition but there is wear to the corners and board edges, with some loss to the surface of the leather and paper. There is fading to the edges of the back board and rubbing to the boards. The spine is sunned and rubbed.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled and there is an ex libris plate for Anita Richeson Baker. The pages show tanning and occasional foxing. The pages feature illustrative borders in blue throughout by Gédé.
Dimensions approximately 20.3cm x 14.7cm x 1.7cm.
