This lovely edition of Letters to Young Ladies by Mrs L.H.Sigourney was published by Jackson and Walford in 1841. The book is bound in dark blue cloth with embossed detail to the boards and gilt lettering to the spine.
Letters to Young Ladies by L. H. Sigourney was a guide offering practical advice and moral wisdom for young women. First published in 1837, this fascinating piece of social history covers essential topics such as the value of religion, knowledge, industry, and health. Mrs. Sigourney, who was a revered poet and author, imparts guidance on domestic matters, manners, friendship, and self-control, aiming to shape virtuous and capable individuals.
It's in good condition but a split in the cloth at the top of the front joint has been repaired and there is more minor splitting to the spine ends where they've been crushed. The corners show wear and slight splitting to reveal the board beneath. There are minor marks to the cloth and the spine is faintly sunned. Some of the page segments stick out from the edge of the text block.
Inside, the front free endpaper and half title page have been removed so the book opens onto the title page. There is a name and address written on the front pastedown, along with a bookseller's sticker in the top corner. The pages show light age toning throughout with occasional marking and soiling. There are also cracks to the gutter in places and as mentioned above, some page segments stick out slightly from the edge of the text block.
Dimensions approximately 17.2cm x 11.2cm x 2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned paper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
