So the book is late Georgian. It's bound in full calf but has been rebacked, with old backstrip laid down over the new leather spine. There is also a modern leather title label. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMrs Graham spent much of her life travelling with her first husband on his naval service and this book results from their visit to Italy in 1818\/1819. She was quite an incredible woman, growing up in India before marrying a Naval Officer. In 1821, Maria was invited to accompany her husband aboard HMS Doris, a 36-gun frigate under his command. The destination was Chile in South America and the purpose was to protect British mercantile interests in the area. Tragedy struck in April 1822, shortly after the ship had rounded Cape Horn as her husband died of a fever on boards, so HMS \u003ci id=\"mwXw\"\u003eDoris\u003c\/i\u003e arrived in Valparaiso\u003ca rel=\"mw:WikiLink\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valpara%C3%ADso\" title=\"Valparaíso\" id=\"mwYA\"\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e without a captain, but rather a captain's widow. Many of the naval officers stationed in Valparaíso – British, Chilean and American – were keen to help Maria (with one American captain even offering to sail her back to Britain), but she was determined to manage independently. She rented a small cottage, turned her back on the English colony and lived among the Chileans for a whole year.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe book is in good condition but there is wear and occasional loss to the surface of the leather around the corners and board edges. The leather shows marks and scuffing, with some peeling to the surface of the leather. There is darkening to the spine and rubbing to the gilt decoration. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInside, there is a name plate glued to the front pastedown and a penned name to one of the preliminary blank pages. The pages show age toning and scattered foxing throughout. There is a contemporary penned note to the bottom of the title page, stating that her second marriage was to Augustus Wall Callcott. The book features a frontispiece and five plates. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDimensions of the book are approximately 22.1cm x 14.3cm x 2.4cm. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery book purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable.
