The book is undated but after some research, I've managed to date this edition to circa 1812. It features an Account of all those English Plants which are Remarkable for their Virtues and of the Drugs which are produced by Vegetables of Other Countries, with their Descriptions and their Uses as proved by experience. There are also directions for the gathering and preserving of roots, herbs, flowers and seeds.

Please note that the book is missing 6 of it's hand coloured plates. It contains 48 hand coloured plates when the title page states there should be 54.

Sir John Hill was an Englishman born in the 18th century, known for his very diverse career - that included (but not limited to) apothecary, writer, and botanist. He initially trained as an apothecary in London but later ventured into acting, which did not yield significant success. In the 1740s, he gained attention for prescribing botanicals to the upper class and sought membership in the prestigious Royal Society - he was not successful. He achieved notoriety for some of his novels which were classed as sensational and vulgar.

It's bound in early half calf with marbled boards - there is slight rubbing to the extremities, with loss to the marbled paper in places. The corners are worn and crushed, and the board can be seen where the leather has split. There is blind stamped decoration and gilt to the spine, along with a leather title label. The spine is sunned. There is a slight crack to the bottom of the front hinge.

Inside, there is minor cracking to the hinges but the binding is firm. Two plates are loose but still attached. Pages 367 - 376 have a small worm trail to upper corner. The pages show light browning and sporadic foxing. A tear to the title page has been repaired.

Dimensions approximately 20.3cm x 12.8cm x 3.7cm.

The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.

I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape.
