For Gentlemen and Ladies; A Calendar, pointing out what should be done every Month","description":"This very rare little book of The Garden-Companion For Gentlemen and Ladies features a Calendar, pointing out what should be done every Month, in the Green-House, Flower, Fruit and Kitchen-Garden; with the proper Seasons for Sowing, Planting, \u0026amp;c. It was published by J Bell. It is undated but the title page states it is a third edition. The first edition was believed to be published around 1770 and the seventh edition in 1795. So I'd estimate it to be 1770's - there is a date penned inside but I'm not 100% sure if it's 1770 or 1778. It was compiled by James Trusler who famously noted that 'gentlemen could bend the earth to supply their tables, while ladies would find that tending and arranging flowers \"contributes to their health\"'.\n\nThe book provides monthly and weekly tasks for the budding home-horticulturist, with sections on kitchen gardens, pleasure-and-flower gardens, and green houses. This was not a book for the lower classes - it was aimed at ladies and gentlemen of wealth and leisure time. \n\nIt is in the original full calf binding with four raised bands to the spine. It's in very good condition, with wear and crushing to the corners which has caused minor loss in the leather. The board edges also show light wear and there is marking and scuffing to the leather boards - the front shows two chips in the leather. The spine is darkened, with loss to the spine ends, and there is splitting to the external joints - the boards remain securely bound. \n\nInside, there is tanning to the endpapers and to the edges of the preliminary and end pages. The pages are clean and bright with sporadic foxing. There is a penned name and date on the title page and a small hole in page 45. \n\nDimensions approximately 13cm x 8cm x 1cm. \n\nThe book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned paper and ribbon.\n\nI use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).","brand":"The Vintage Bookworm UK","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57692094628213,"sku":null,"price":350.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0539\/9271\/8525\/files\/3E61646C-E1A2-4167-A423-A900D9FB2F85.jpg?v=1792923449","url":"https:\/\/thevintagebookworm.co.uk\/products\/18th-century-the-garden-companion-for-gentlemen-and-ladies-a-calendar-pointing-out-what-should-be-done-every-month","provider":"The Vintage Bookworm UK","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
