This beautiful edition of Westward Ho! was published by Macmillan and Co in 1901. So the book is from the very last year of the Victorian era.
The book is bound in full calf leather with five raised bands to the spine and intricate gilt decoration. The text block edges are marbled and there is a blind stamped coat of arms to the front board.
The book is in very good condition for it's age, but the leather does show some marking and scuffing, with dark discolouring to the back board. The corners are lightly worn and the top edge of the text block is dulled. The spine is darkened, with some minor chipping to the surface of the leather.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled to match the edge of the text block and there is a presentation plate glued to the front pastedown. The pages have some light age toning with very occasional creasing to the paper. They're remarkably clean and bright for their age. There is a crack to the gutter between the half title page and the frontispiece. There are a couple of small chips to the edge of Page 31.
There are black and white illustrations throughout which add to the charm of this antique beauty.
Dimensions approximately 18.5cm x 13cm x 3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
