This lovely early Victorian edition of Proverbial Philosophy by Martin F Tupper was published by T Hatchard in 1857.
The book is bound in blue cloth with ornate blind stamped decoration and gold gilt to the front board and spine. It's a fine example of the beauty of Victorian bookbinding and is in good condition for it's age. There is light wear and bumping to the corners and the cloth covering the bottom corners has split slightly. The cloth has also lifted from the inside edge of the back board (see photo). The boards show rubbing and light marking, and the spine is also lightly rubbed. Crushing to the spine ends has caused splitting in the cloth.
Inside, there is cracking to the hinges and a neatly written inscription on the front free endpaper. The pages show age toning throughout, but the pages are in remarkably clean condition. There is foxing to the preliminary pages. There are some superficial cracks to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound.

The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
