This beautiful antique edition of The Poetical Works of Thomas Campbell was published by Griffith Farran Browne and Co. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be circa 1890/1900. So the book is late Victorian.
The book is bound in brown cloth over bevelled boards with striking gilt decoration to the front board and spine. All edges are gilt. Externally, it's in very good condition with only light wear and bumping to the corners. There is crushing to the spine ends which has caused minor splitting. A few page segments stick out from the edge of the text block.
Inside, the front free endpaper has been removed and there is occasional foxing (most noticeable to the preliminary pages and text block edges). There are some cracks to the gutter in places but the pages feel tightly bound still, despite some of them not being flush to the binding webbing. There are some lovely black and white illustration plates which add to the charm of this Victorian poetry book.
Dimensions approximately 18.8cm x 13.3cm x 3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
