This beautiful edition of A Book of Verses for Children Compiled by E V Lucas was published by Grant Richards in 1897. It's been rebound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to the spine. What's particularly lovely is that the gentleman who rebound it inserted a page at the back of the book, detailing why it was given a new binding and what the process was for restoring the book. It was rebound by Anthony Gardner OBE in 1968.
Biography of Anthony Gardner - He was born in Dublin and brought up partly in London and partly in County Tipperary. He studied English at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, where he specialised in Yeats and the Romantic poets, graduating with a double first. His entry into journalism was as a trainee sub-editor on Harpers & Queen, of which he later became deputy editor. He has written features, book reviews and travel pieces for many of Britain and Ireland’s leading newspapers and magazines, as well as Town & Country and Vogue in the US. He has also edited several books.
The book is in very good condition, with the most noticeable flaw being the fading to the spine. There is also minor marking to the top edge of the text block.
Inside, there is a name plate glued to the front pastedown; the endpapers are beautifully marbled. The endpapers show light age toning and sporadic foxing, with occasional creasing. The front colour illustration before the title page has been repaired neatly with tape. There is a written name and date on the title page.
Dimensions of the book are approximately 19.3cm 14cm x 4cm.
The book will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes ahalfre sturdy enough).
